#13 「1日1語」<breakthrough infections>（ブレークスルー感染）

<breakthrough infections>という言葉を最近よく見かける。日本語でどう表現されているのか分からないが、意味はこの記事で説明されている通り、ワクチンを打っても感染すること。ワクチンの効き目はメーカーによって異なるものの、100％効くというのはないので、何％かの人はワクチンを打っても感染するというのは驚くにあたらないが、実際にそういうケースが確認され始めたということだろう。まだデータは少ないようだが、マサチューセッツ州ではワクチンを接種した人の0.1％に当たる4000人が「ブレークスルー感染」したとこの記事では報告されている。

因みに、この記事の見出しは"The U.S. Bets Big on an Antiviral to Fight COVI-19"だが、アメリカ政府が32億ドルを投じて新型コロナに効く「抗ウイルス薬」の開発を後押しすることを指している。

Today, the Department of Health and Human Services announced that the Biden Administration has authorized $3.2 billion to accelerate the development of antivirals already in the R&D pipeline, with the hope that at least one will be ready for release before the end of the year.

ワクチンの効果がどの程度の期間持続するのか明確ではないし（数か月から1年という説もある）、そもそもワクチンが打てない人や嫌いな人もいるので、効果的な薬の開発は急がれる。アメリカでは抗ウイルス薬を開発している会社が19社あり、そのうちの1社は年内にも暫定承認が得られる見通しとのこと。日本もこの分野で失地回復をしたいところだ。
